LegalShield Review: The LegalShield History

The MLM company we now know as LegalShield has a long history. It seems that in 1969 in Oklahoma, Harland

attorney terms

LegalShield attorneys can take you through a process you shouldn't handle yourself

Stonecipher (the founder) was involved in a car accident that was no fault of his. But the other party decided to sue Harland and the attorney fees depleted Harland's savings even though he (Harland) was the winner in the case. This type of thing happens a lot; people are in the right but face months, if not years of court procedures and the attorney fees harm their financial being.

They win the court case but actually lose.

So Harland recognized this serious problem and set out to solve this issue.

Sportsman's Motor Club

Harland began studying how legal expenses work in Europe and other countries. Seeing an entrepreneur opportunity that would help solve this problem, Harland founded Sportsman's Motor Club in 1972.

It was what it said, a membership club where members would have a variety of benefits with their paid membership; this included legal aid by reimbursing legal expenses.

Became Pre-Paid Legal Services

In 1976, Harland and the other leaders incorporated the company under a new name… Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc.

Seeing a great calling in 1983, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. began using the multilevel marketing business format and in 1984, the company went public on the NASDAQ exchange.

Sometime during 1997, Pre-Paid Legal Services acquired The People's Network which was a television programming station that helped with personal development.

In 1999, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Pre-Paid Legal Faced Many Legal Battles

Over the next few years, Pre-Paid Legal found itself under tight scrutiny from various States and the Federal Trade Commission. The company did settle several cases and won others.

Pre-Paid Legal Services Becomes LegalShield

In 2011, Pre-Paid Legal was acquired by MidOcean Partners and it was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange and became a privately held company. Later that year, an agreement was made to change the company's name to LegalShield.

LegalShield Review: The LegalShield Leadership

The founder of LegalShield, Harland Stonecipher passed away in 2014. But he did watch the company he found become a huge success.

In this LegalShield review, I am going to tell you a little about the current LegalShield leadership.

Jeff Bell – Chief Executive Officer

Jeff Bell earned a B.A. degree in history & Spanish from Kenyon College in 1984, a M.A. from Johns Hopkins in 1988, and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School in 1989.

James Rosseau Sr. – Business Solutions President

James has spent 20 years in business leadership positions. He was with All State Insurance and JP Morgan Chase.

Darnell is a highly recognized name from building a huge LegalShield team. He joined the company in 1998 after he gained a degree in Public Relations from Bowie State University.

Kathy Pinson – Chief Operating Officer

Kathy has been with LegalShield since 1979. She is a backbone of the company and is also a Certified Public Accountant.

These are just a handful of the leadership behind LegalShield.

LegalShield Review: The LegalShield Compensation Plan

The LegalShield compensation plan can be quite lucrative for those home based LegalShield business owners who get out and gain customers and new representatives. If you just sit back and expect that people will ask you, you are probably not going to have much success. The comp plan is simply based on levels. At each level, you earn a higher commission rate on yearly memberships sold. You will also earn sales overrides on sales made by downline members.

The levels are:

  • Associate
  • Senior Associate
  • Manager
  • Senior Manager
  • Director
  • Senior Director
  • and Executive Director

The LegalShield Compensation plan does work on a Breakaway plan. When a leg breaks away, you will earn breakaway bonuses. You also earn commissions on members who renew their plans yearly.

LegalShield Review – LegalShield Legal Issues

LegalShield has had a few legal battles themselves.

  • In 2001, Wyoming warned the company against misrepresentation
  • Also in 2001, many claimants sued Pre-Paid Legal and Pre-Paid Legal was victorious in most, but they did lose 1 case for over $9 Million.
  • In 2009, the SEC subpoenaed various documents from LegalShield but no charges were filed.
  • Also in 2009, the FTC also warned the company on misrepresenting but nothing came of it.

Overall, the company has stayed clean but we all know that many agencies are quite stringent on MLM companies.

LegalShield Review – What Others Are Saying

Like any business, LegalShield has a mix of positive and negative reviews. I have decided to give you a “taste” of these reviews:

Negative LegalShield Review

This company is why people hate multi-level marketing companies.

Their company is run by lawyers who want your money in small monthly increments. Once you realize you don't want it, they keep charging you, and you have to keep calling over and over again, and maybe you might get your money back. They keep saying that they canceled it and will issue a refund, but weeks go by and they charge you again. You have to keep calling, and once again they say that they will issue a refund and cancel it.

Then you have to wait two weeks and hope you remember to follow up on it. I suppose they are legally allowed to operate like this because it was written by lawyers for them to make money. Debbie in Arizona

Positive LegalShield Review

My wife and I have used the service over 100 times in the last ten years, and we are not criminals. We have been completely satisfied with the results.

We have had ten traffic tickets over the last ten years (five by my wife, three by my teenager and two by me), but we have zero points. Also, we have five warranty issues that companies were not going to respond to, but after the attorneys wrote a letter, the warranty companies responded. The attorneys also helped us with a home contract that saved us $87.000. We had a cell phone bill that was $700 wrong, and the attorneys got it back.

And those are just a few examples. Ross in Missouri

Positive LegalShield Review

I started out with a LegalShield small business membership and it has served me in so many ways: Getting out of an office lease I couldn't pay after having a serious accident with a head injury. Being over billed for an ER visit (actually ended up with a refund from the hospital). Getting my will and trust done. Debt collection with my clients who wouldn't pay. Traffic court representation (getting my ticket reduced from 13 to 5 over) and not having to pay the attorney any extra fees for representing me. Incredible discounts on my cell phone, hotels and car rentals. I will never be without this invaluable service that has paid for itself over and over again. Kimberlee in Utah

LegalShield Review – My Personal Opinion About LegalShield

I know that legal expenses can run to outrageous amounts. As entrepreneurs, I know that there are various legal documents that must be done from time to time and to pay attorneys to do these 1 by 1, it can run into high figures.

If you really consider all that LegalShield offers, the pricing plan is quite fair.

Plus a LegalShield membership does have some other perks that include discounts at shopping and dining that include:

  • Kohls
  • Verizon
  • Ihop
  • TicketMaster
  • Target
  • Applebees
  • AMC Theaters
  • HP Products
  • Sam's Club
  • and more…

Overall, I believe LegalShield is a viable MLM opportunity. I do not believe it is a scam. If it were, it would have been shut down long ago.

LegalShield Review Conclusion

Like any home based MLM business, it does take work to build a successful business. You may find a variety of negative reviews from people who assumed that business would just “fall from the trees” for them. When it didn't happen, they decided to call it a scam. That would be similar to opening a restaurant on a desolate country road and not advertising and expecting that you will get a huge crowd of diners.

Recruiting is important

The way successful LegalShield representatives build a monstrous business is by recruiting, but so many representatives have not been trained properly on recruiting techniques.
